Taoist Tablet

A stone tablet with mid-relief sculptures of taoist images. Set against a vibrant red wall.

Hua Shan, Shaanxi province, China

A Photograph of a stone tablet taken in 2014 at Hua Shan scenic area located at the base of the “most dangerous hike” in China. The photograph was taken inside the courtyard of the Jade Spring Temple (Yuquan Yuan) built sometime between 960-1127 during the Northern Song Dynasty. This tablet could very likely be over 1,000 years old.

It is one of over 300 stone tablets at the base of Huashan, China’s most precipitous mountain. In Taoist belief Hua Shan, also know as the Great West Mountain or the Splendid Mountain, is the mountain of wealth and one of the 5 sacred mountains of China. According to the UNESCO World Heritage site Mount Hua is purely Taoist, meaning that there are no relics of any other religion found on the mountain.

Hua Shan Scenic Area is on UNESCO’s tentative list of sites.
